Plans for a Drive-Thru KFC restaurant on the corner of Cyttir Lane and Caernarfon Road in Bangor have been approved by Gwynedd Council.

The existing Topps Tiles showroom, next to Tesco supermarket, will be demolished to make way for the fast food restaurant.

The new restaurant will be open between 8am and 11pm and will provide 42 full-time jobs, with the  existing KFC restaurant Bangor High Street also remaining open.

The proposal includes an external seating area, parking provision, landscaping and reconfiguration of the existing car parking area to allow vehicle circulation for the drive-thru.

The planning application had been submitted by Gastronomy Foods UK Ltd and outlines KFC as its client.

Gastronomy Foods said that it had looked at a number of other potential sites in the Bangor area but they were all either “unsuitable” or did not have enough room for a drive-through facility.

A note on the application from Gwynedd Council planner said: “The national retailer is proposing a ‘drive-thru’ business model at the unit, which will operate alongside their existing non-drive thru outlet in the city centre demonstrating the retailer’s confidence that this unit will not have a negative impact on trade in the city centre.

“The proposed unit will seek to optimise on the passing trade along Caernarfon Road, rather than be a destination in itself, as well as meeting a need for the lunchtime and dinner trade for employees and customers at nearby retail and employment units.

“The new store will allow the retailer to complement the surrounding out-of-town retail which exists in this location along Caernarfon Road.”

The future of the existing Topps Tiles business in Bangor is still unknown.
