Bangor City Council have confirmed an election will be held for the vacancy of a councillor for Deiniol ward.
The vacancy follows the resignation of Labour councillor Salik Rahman who was elected in August 2018, but has now stood down due to other commitments. Mr Rahman offered his resignation at a council meeting on 24 June.
Deiniol is one of eight electoral wards in the city of Bangor. The ward covers the centre of the city including the High Street and Bangor Cathedral and, according to the 2011 Census, has a population of 1,839 people.
Two councillors represent Deiniol on Bangor City Council and one county councillor on Gwynedd Council.
Nominations for the vacancy are now open and papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer, Gwynedd Council, Council Offices, Shirehall Street, Caernarfon LL55 1SH no later than 4.00pm on Thursday, 8 August, 2019.
Forms of Nomination Paper may be obtained from the Returning Officer who will at the request of any elector for the ward, prepare a nomination paper for signature.
If the election is contested, a poll will take place on Thursday, 5 September, 2019.
Bangor City Council
Bangor City Council meets regularly to discuss various issues relating to the City of Bangor. It is consulted by Gwynedd Council on planning applications submitted within its boundaries, on highway matters and on licensing applications in the City.
The Council is responsible for land and property in Bangor, including the City Council Offices at Ffordd Gwynedd, Bangor Pier, Nantporth Football Stadium on Holyhead Road and Hafan Drop-in Centre on Garth Road.
Public spaces including Ashley Jones Fields off Siliwen Road, Dargie Fields off Princess Road, the grounds of Bangor Cathedral, park at Bryn Llwyd off Caernarfon Road, the Lookout on Holyhead Road and the seating area off Farrar Road are also the responsibility of the city council.
In the city centre the council owns and is responsible for maintaining the City’s War Memorial and the Town Clock. It is responsible for the provision and maintenance of Christmas lights and decorations as well as the hanging baskets and floral displays in the City Centre.
