North Wales Police are recruiting volunteer Police Cadets in the Anglesey and Gwynedd area, including Bangor.
If you are aged between 13-15 and want to learn about the police, gain new skills and experience and give back to the community, this is a great opportunity.
Why should I join the cadets?
Police cadets join for lots of reasons. As well as having fun and meeting new people, it’s also a great way to:
- Gain new skills and experience
- Learn about policing
- Make a difference in your local community
- Take part in all kinds of activities – from patrolling local events, to charity walks, to karting or caving
Young people are sometimes portrayed in a bad light in the media. Being a cadet is a chance for you to show the positive contribution you can make to your community.
What skills will I gain?
Being a cadet can help you develop these skills:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Problem solving
- First aid
- How to plan and deliver a presentation
- CV, interview and application form techniques
Learning
You will have the opportunity to learn about policing, visiting a variety of police departments and find out what they do. These can include areas such as Forensics, Custody and Collisions, as well as meeting furry friends in the canine unit.
You’ll learn about policing duties and basic law, and develop teamwork and communication skills.
Fun
It’s not all about hard work, police cadets can also enjoy activities like karting, rafting, caving, hanging out at a high ropes activity centre and golf. Though it can also be something as simple as going for ice cream together!
Will it help me join the police?
As a cadet you’ll get a great insight into police work, but it is not a direct path to joining.
Duties
Cadet duties can be quite varied. You won’t be sent out on operational police work (because it carries too much risk), but you will definitely be involved with the community safety side of what the police do.
Here’s an idea of some of the things police cadets do:
- Patrolling large events such as the Urdd Eisteddfod and local events like Mold Carnival
- Carrying out vehicle safety initiatives
- Providing crime reduction information in a pop-up shop
- Taking part in operations such as Op Skip Jump, a park rejuventation project
- Assisting with the Force Open Day
- Stewarding sports events and community fun days
- Representing NWP in Remembrance Sunday and civic parades
- Raising money for charities in a variety of ways
Meetings are held at local colleges across North Wales. You will attend one of these close to where you live.
There is space for 20 Cadets at each unit, and there are currently 6 Units across North Wales in these policing areas: Anglesey, Gwynedd North, West Conwy Coastal, Denbighshire Coastal & Abergele, Deeside and
Wrexham.
During term times, police cadets meet on a weekday evening (6.30pm to 8pm) for a training session. You may also volunteer each month to assist local policing and community initiatives.
NWP are currently recruiting Cadets to join their unit in Bangor
