Young people from Maesgeirchen in Bangor enjoyed a Community Recycle and Environmental Day on Tuesday, 26 February. The youngsters spent the day tidying up the estate, litter picking and recycling and learning about the importance of keeping their environment clean and tidy.

The Maesgeirchen Community group – Partneriaeth Maesgeirchen Partnership (PMP) – worked with Gwynedd Council Youth Services, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG), North Wales Police, Keep Wales Tidy, Tidy Towns and many other partners came together to blitz the estate with a litter pick and a major collection of residents garden and household waste.

The young people and Youth Service staff, PMP and partners spent months planning and coordinating the project with the main aim being to empower, inspired and educate the community about the importance of taking ownership of our community, looking after where we live and getting everyone to work together for a cleaner, healthier environment.

Using the Maesgeirchen youth centre as a base, the Gwynedd Council recycling team with Tidy towns were present to give out educational information to all those taking part. Eight large skips were placed in various locations and were filled within 2 hours. An incredible 50 tonnes of household waste was collected.

The young people from the Youth Club and members of the Community hit the streets with litter picks and bin bags, They blitzed the whole of Tan y Bryn and Pen y Bryn areas collecting over 40 bags of litter. After the litter pick all the volunteers met up in the centre to discuss the environment and importance of keeping our streets clean.

Mirain from the Youth Services said: “The young volunteers and members of the Youth Club are a credit to the estate, we thrive as a service to provide fun and interest to the young people but at the same time educating them in a productive but constructive way, just like this weeks litter pick and environmental awareness day.

“We are working with the PMP and other partners and hopefully by working together we can arrange many more great projects in the future.”

The young people were presented with certificates, refreshments and a goodie bag for their great effort.

Local councillor Nigel Pickavance said: “Maesgeirchen residents pride themselves on being a strong, caring community. Again they are leading the way in empowering and partnership working. As an area we are progressing and heading in the right direction. With our young people, the future is bright.

“We would like to thank all the agencies involved, including the CCG Warden and our PCSO for their tireless work and their help.”
