A former Welsh Guards soldier originally from Bangor has published a deeply personal memoir about his experiences of conflict, the hidden impact of military service and his journey towards recovery from PTSD.

Graham Paul Roberts, who is originally from Glanadda, has told his story in Echoes in the Silence: The Battles That Nobody Sees, tracing a life that took him from Bangor into the British Army and some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones.

Bangor features throughout the memoir and remains an important part of Graham’s story, as the place where his journey began and a city to which he retains a strong connection.

Graham served for almost two decades in the British Army with the Welsh Guards, with his military career including deployments to Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Afghanistan.

After his time in the Army, his experiences overseas continued through private security work in Iraq and Syria during the conflict with ISIS, including mentoring work in Syria.

However, Echoes in the Silence also explores a very different battle – the psychological impact Graham faced away from the battlefield.

The memoir describes his struggles with Complex PTSD, depression, flashbacks and emotional trauma, and the difficulties of adjusting to life after years shaped by military service and conflict.

Graham writes candidly about the process of rebuilding his life and how therapy, the support of his family and the birth of his daughter helped him find a new sense of purpose and begin his recovery.

He hopes that by speaking openly about his own experiences, the book can help raise awareness of veterans’ mental health and offer hope to others facing similar struggles.

Since the memoir was released, Graham’s story has begun attracting attention beyond North Wales, including interviews with veteran podcasts in the United States, radio stations and other media outlets.

Despite the international interest, Graham was particularly keen for his story to reach people back home in Bangor and across North Wales.

He said: “Bangor features several times throughout the book, as it’s where my story began and has always been a special place to me.

“My mission is to raise awareness of veterans’ mental health, resilience, and hope for those who may be struggling.”
