Triangle of Sadness (15)

Ruben Östlund, 2022, 150m

Cast – Thomas Thorwid, Harris Dickinson, Vicki Berlin, Woody Harrelson

Monday 21 – Thursday 24 November

£7.50 standard / £6.50 over 60 / £6 student / £5.50 child (under 18s)

This riotously funny epic by Ruben Östlund (The Square, Force Majeure) won this years Cannes Film Festival top prize, the Palme d’Or. Carl and Yaya are fashion models and influencers whose romantic relationship is increasingly soured by money. Offered free places on a luxury cruise, they find themselves sharing a superyacht with a Russian oligarch and some genteel arms dealers, while a deeply cynical Marxist alcoholic captains an increasingly chaotic ship. What begins as a great upstairs/downstairs set-up quickly turns entirely upside-down. It’s a twisted tour-de-force which asserts that power corrupts absolutely – strap yourself in for a bumpy ride.

S4C@40 – Welsh Language Cinema

Rhosyn a Rhith / Milwr Bychan / Branwen

This short season of Welsh Language cinema films at Pontio is in part a celebration of S4C’s fortieth birthday and an opportunity to remember and celebrate cinematic highlights from the Channel’s early years. Back in 1987 Stephen Bayly’s comedy Coming Up Roses and Karl Francis’ political drama Boy Soldier were about to make history as the first Welsh language films to open in London’s West End. Although they were to be soon joined by Hedd Wyn, Branwen, Gadael Lenin, Un Nos ola Leuad, Y Mapiwr and others in the decade that followed it was clear that the Channel’s lack of will and confidence in making Wales a significant film-making nation would lead to hopes diminishing as infrastructure and support failed to materialise.

The recent success of Gwledd(The Feast) a Welsh language film playing successfully up and down the cinemas of the UK and beyond is raising hopes once again….. what will be the fate of Welsh language cinema over the next 40 years and what will S4C’s role be in its continued development.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever (12A)

Ryan Coogler, 2022, 161m

£15/£13 concessions

N’famady Kouyaté is a young energetic master musician from Guinea (Conakry), who relocated to Cardiff in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist who wowed audiences across the UK and Ireland during autumn/winter 2019/20 with his modern interpretations of traditional West African Mandingue songs and rhythms supporting Gruff Rhys on the Pang! album tour.

N’famady’s primary instrument is the balafon – the traditional wooden xylophone, sacred to West African culture and his family heritage of the griot/djeli. In Guinea he founded ‘Les Héritiers du Mandingue’ a tradi-modern group that toured extensively in West Africa.

In the UK N’famady has played both as a solo artist and with a full band line up – where his arrangements are a fusion of Mandingue African with western jazz, pop, indie, and funk influences provided by an ever-evolving collective of musicians. Instrumentation includes balafon, keyboards, drumkit, djembe, guitar, bass, kora, doundoun, congas, saxophone, trumpet, & callabash. N’famady’s performances create amazing atmospheres and vibrations wherever he goes, and audiences are charmed by his infectious enthusiasm and joy.
