Bangor University is planning to demolish the Alun Roberts building on Deiniol Road.

The 11-storey building, also known as the ‘Chemistry Tower’ and was named for the naturalist Alun Roberts, who was a Professor of Agricultural Botany at University College of North Wales, Bangor.

The building is currently used for timetabled teaching and tutorials and is occupied by a number of academic departments including the School of Natural Sciences, the Biocomposites Centre, the Covid-19 waste water research team and the Confucius Institute.

A statement from Undeb Bangor Student’s Union said: “The University is planning to demolish the 11-storey Alun Roberts building, sometimes known as the Chemistry Tower.

“For students, this will involve changes to the location of some teaching and research activities. Alternative arrangements have been made for teaching and tutorials held from 15th October onwards – please check your timetable for up-to-date information.

“The safety of students, staff and the public are paramount, and access in front of the tower block has been restricted to safeguard pedestrians. This is due to an incident during recent high winds.

“The exclusion perimeter will be extended in preparation for demolition works. Signage will indicate new pedestrian routes.”

“The University’s Head of Health and Safety, Gareth W. Jones comments, “Safety in this instance has to be our primary consideration and the support and understanding of students and staff during this period of disruption is greatly appreciated.”

A spokesperson from Bangor University confirmed the building is scheduled for demolition and said: “An exclusion perimeter is being extended in preparation for the demolition works.”
