Planning permission has been approved to convert of previous social club in Maesgeirchen, Bangor, into a convenience store.

According to the planning application the scheme will provide a ‘measurable benefit’ bringing a prominent property which has stood vacant for a number of years back into use and secure the long term future of the building.

The property in recent years has suffered from a lack of investment and according to the planning application has become ‘an eyesore and dumping ground’.

The existing property was purchased by in 2016 by Shilling and Shoker Enterprises Ltd and a planning application was submitted and approved at appeal as follows: Planning has previously been approved on the site (Application Ref C17/0084/11/LL) to demolish the existing building and replace it with a three storey building with a 24 hour convenience shop on the ground floor and 10 one bedroom flats above and the permission is still valid and could be implemented.

Under the new plans customer car parking is being provided to the front of the property and is accessed off Penrhyn Avenue along with a secure cycle storage area to encourage sustainable transport. A refrigerated storage area will be located at the rear of the development.

Following a public consultation objections about noise from crowds outside the store to the detriment of the amenities of the elderly and not  enough parking space for a development of this size.

The planning document states the convenience store will create 12 new jobs.
