A planning application has been submitted to build a new KFC restaurant with a drive-thru on land located at the existing Topps Tiles unit, on the corner of Cyttir Lane and Caernarfon Road in Bangor.

The existing tile showroom, next to Tesco supermarket, will be demolished to make way for the fast food restaurant, if planning permission is approved by Gwynedd Council.

The proposal also includes an external seating area, parking provision, landscaping and reconfiguration of the existing car parking area to allow vehicle circulation for the drive-thru.

The planning application has been submitted by Gastronomy Foods UK Ltd and outlines KFC as its client, noting that the development would create 42 full-time jobs and will be open between 8am and 11pm if approved.

The plans also state that KFC’s restaurant on Bangor High Street will not close despite the new development.

Gastronomy Foods said that it had looked at a number of other potential sites in the Bangor area but they were all either “unsuitable” or did not have enough room for a drive-through facility.

A note on the application from Gwynedd Council planner says: “The national retailer is proposing a ‘drive-thru’ business model at the unit, which will operate alongside their existing non-drive thru outlet in the city centre demonstrating the retailer’s confidence that this unit will not have a negative impact on trade in the city centre.

“The proposed unit will seek to optimise on the passing trade along Caernarfon Road, rather than be a destination in itself, as well as meeting a need for the lunchtime and dinner trade for employees and customers at nearby retail and employment units.

“The new store will allow the retailer to complement the surrounding out-of-town retail which exists in this location along Caernarfon Road.”

The future of the existing Topps Tiles business in Bangor is not known at this stage.
