Yes Cymru, who describe themselves as a ‘non-party campaign’ for an independent Wales, has hit 10,000 members, after gaining a thousand members in just one day.

The campaign for an independent Wales was officially launched in 2016. The membership had previously doubled from 2,500 to 5,000 over just 2 months in the Spring of 2020.

On 31of October, Yes Cymru announced that its membership had increased to 9,000, before the movement went on to gain a thousand new members by
1 November.

Polls in 2014 suggested that support for Welsh independence was around only 14% of voters. The latest poll on Welsh independence conducted in September showed that with ‘don’t knows’ removed, 32% were in favour of Welsh independence.

The movement has held marches in Cardiff, Caernarfon, and Merthyr Tydfil, and marches planned to be held in Wrexham, Tredegar and Swansea were postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

YesCymru Chairman Sion Jobbins said: “’Something big and beautiful and powerful is happening in Wales.

“Westminster’s handling of COVID-19 has shown to people in Wales that the Senedd and Wales can do a better job than Westminster.

“Westminster isn’t the ‘Mother of Parliaments’ – it’s just the world’s biggest gentleman’s club.”

The Welsh independence movement had previously set a target of 10,000 members before the end of the year.

Sion Jobbins added: “We’ve seen the Tory Government in London give contracts worth millions to their friends. Some £12bn – more than the entire health budget in Wales – was wasted on a track and trace system that doesn’t even work!

“”We’re now building a mass movement for independence. We need all hands on deck. Together we are strong. Wales isn’t asking permission any longer. With your support, we’re standing up for our country, communities and decency.”
