Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd Housing association have applied for planning permission to demolish the former shop at Trem Elidir in Bangor and to redevelop the site, creating 8 apartments in two blocks of 4 units, which will offer affordable housing for local people.

The development will consist of 4 x 1 bedroom flats suitable for 2 people and 4 x 2 bedroom flats suitable for 3 people. The existing building, which would be demolished, comprises a site of a former shop and two flats that now do not meet the requirements of the Welsh Housing Quality Standard. The building has been empty for six years and its condition has declined significantly.

Under the proposal Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG) have said that they have evidence of a need for 1 and 2 bedroom flats in Bangor. Following the changes to welfare reform, and in particular to bedroom tax, more 1 and 2 bedroom units are required as some tenants are now struggling with under occupation of the dwellings.

Relocating tenants who are under occupying will possibly release 3-bedroom social rented houses in the city. The current stock profile of CCG shows that they do not have many one and two bedroom units for families and individuals in Glyder ward and Bangor in general.
