The new Ysgol y Garnedd building in Bangor has been shortlisted for three Constructing Excellence Wales awards.
The scheme has been shortlisted for the Digital Construction and Integration & Collaborative Working, as well as Gwynedd Council being shortlisted for Client of the Year.
The new school opened its doors in November 2020 and was funded jointly by Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme, as part of a £12.7 million project to review primary education in Bangor.
Each year the Constructing Excellence Awards are a celebration of everything the UK’s Built Environment has to be proud of. Winners are selected through regional awards programme to go forward to the national finals held every year in the autumn.
Read Construction were responsible for the project at Ysgol Y Garnedd, working with Gwynedd Council and their design consultants on the £9m project which commenced on site in March 2019.
The new 420 place school will provide modern accommodation including fourteen classrooms, two ALN classrooms, a nursery, a Cylch Meithrin and a large hall, along with a number of other different teaching spaces, staff and administration areas.
The new school is located on a site adjacent to the old Ysgol Y Garnedd school building which was oversubscribed and no longer fit for purpose. Following completion of the new school, the existing building has now been demolished to make way for an additional sports field and car parking.
A statement on the Constructing Excellence in Wales website said: “We have received almost a 100 outstanding entries, giving our judges a real headache.
“Year on year your entries demonstrate real performance improvement in the Welsh construction industry. The past 12-months have been the most challenging for many years but our industry has responded to the impact of Covid-19 and uncertainty around Brexit and other political and social issues with ingenuity, steadfastness and by collaborating together. This is reflected in all our entries.
“Well done to everyone and thank you for your dedication, commitment, and willingness to showcase best practice through the CEW Awards.
“Shortlisted entrants will be required to present to a panel of judges in June and a separate email will be sent to you shortly with details of your interview time.
“Winners will be announced at our awards ceremony taking place on Thursday 23rd September at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay
