Ysgol y Faenol in Bangor are undertaking a statutory consultation on a proposal to increase the capacity of the school from 186 pupils to 315.
The statutory consultation will take place between 18 September and 30 October 2018. At the end of the consultation period a report will be presented to the Governing Body of Ysgol y Faenol to make a decision on the next steps. The report will include a response to all the comments received.
Gwynedd Council has secured an investment of £12.7 million for modernising primary education provision in Bangor, which includes a contribution of £6.3 million from the Welsh Government, enabling the Council to review and improve education provision. There is potential to use part of this budget to renovate and increase the capacity of Ysgol y Faenol.
As part of the process, the Bangor Catchment-Area Review Panel (CRP) which includes representatives from the schools in the catchment area, Bangor City Councillors, County Councillors and others, has been involved in the discussions and has considered the opportunities and options available. Following a full consideration of the possible options, it is proposed to increase the capacity of Ysgol y Faenol to 315, addressing the need for places in the Bangor catchment area.
Other proposals for Bangor include a new school for Ysgol y Garnedd increasing the capacity from 210 to 420. Closing Ysgol Coed Mawr and Glanadda (August 2020) and increasing the capacity of Glancegin to receive additional foundation phase pupils. Consideration will also be given to Secondary provision and a new build for Ysgol Ein Harglwyddes (Our Lady’s Catholic School) and improvements to parts of Ysgol Hirael.
