Plans have been approved for a major redevelopment of the Bangor Islamic Centre. The centre attracts worshippers from across North Wales, although this still a relatively small community, the largest attendance being for the weekly Friday prayer. The aim is to provide improved facilities for existing members.
Work has now started on the mosque, which the plans describe as a new architecturally improved building, that aims to provide a centre that has a positive impact on the community, which is non conflicting with its surroundings.
The new main entrance for the mosque will be the back of the existing building which faces Asda, part of the ground floor will be a prayer area for female worshippers with an independent entrance to the side, this area also has its own ablution and toilet facilities.
The upper levels of the centre will contain further prayer areas which were previously housed towards the front of the building. The area at the front of the existing building (High Street Side) will now be used for teaching.
