All youth clubs in Gwynedd will be closed from Easter after Gwynedd council’s cabinet approved plans to shut all 39 youth clubs and replace them county-wide clubs at all secondary schools instead, saving the council £270,000 from its budget.

A youth worker will be based at each school and a programme of activities and projects, which are likely to start in September, will be run through the schools and in the community for 11-19 year olds throughout the year. Personal Support will also be provided to 16-25 year olds who are facing barriers to education, training or work.

According to a report, the new service will only need 21 part time workers and 19 full time posts, compared to the current 100 part time youth workers and 12 full time staff.

Cabinet member Councillor Craig ab Iago claimed the change was “difficult” but necessary. He said: “We can’t continue to do the same thing year in year out if the service does not meet the needs of young people”.

Youth clubs in the Bangor / Ogwen Area include:

Maesgeirchen (Youth Centre)

Bethesda (Cefnfaes Youth Centre)

Mynydd Llandygai (Memorial Hall)

Tregarth (Community Centre)
