Jane Clapham, Manager and Senior Tutor of the Dru Yoga Centre near Bethesda, has been using meditation for over 30 years, she has noticed that this has had many beneficial effects on her own physical and mental health.

A huge body of research now shows how meditation helps to improve our health.

Stress reduction

A recent study of nearly 1,300 adults demonstrated that meditation may decrease stress and anxiety. This effect was strongest in individuals with the highest levels of stress. Research has also shown that meditation may also improve symptoms of stress-related conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder and fibromyalgia.

Promotes emotional health

People who meditate regularly have been found to have an improved self-image and more positive outlook on life. In studies comparing brain activities in meditators and non-meditators, those who practiced meditation showed the greatest changes in activity in areas related to positive thinking and optimism.

Jane was brought up in West Wales and came to Bangor University where she studied psychology, feeling so ‘at home’ in the area she ended up staying.

Since then Jane has taught yoga, meditation and sound based courses at the Dru Yoga Centre near Bethesda, and has also travelled around the world encouraging people to take their health into their own hands.

Jane said: “I’ve noticed that on days that I meditate, I am calmer and better able to cope with the demands of the day. Dru meditation is a yoga-based meditation style which combines preparatory movements, breathing techniques and visualisations to make meditation practical and effective.
