Bangor University has cemented its reputation as a centre of weightlifting excellence as student athletes broke numerous records at the Welsh Senior Weightlifting Championships recently.

Held at the University’s Sport Centre on 2 March, the Championships saw two athletes competing for national glory on home turf at Canolfan Brailsford. Catrin Jones from Bangor and Michael Farmer, both Sport Scholarship Athletes, took home Gold Medals in their various disciplines and between them broke Welsh Senior and British U20 records.

Catrin, a student at the School of Psychology, went on to break the U23 Clean and Jerk record, and equalled the British U23 record total for her 55Kg weight class.

Michael, currently in the second year of a Geography degree at the School of Natural Sciences, broke the Snatch, Clean and Jerk record and the overall total for the U23 67Kg class.

Also taking part at the Welsh Seniors was Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and Bangor University staff member, Gareth Evans, who continued his success by winning his class and setting new Welsh and British senior records. Gareth is currently gearing towards the European Championships that will take place in April in Batumi, Georgia.
