When Sarah moved to Bangor from Hong Kong six years ago she didn’t speak any English, and her family had to help her with everyday tasks like banking and shopping.

Sarah decided to join an English class at Coleg Menai to help her learn the language and to settle in the area. After working as a hairdresser in Hong Kong she was keen to get back in to this and she says that she was excited to go back to college having left education at just 12 years old.

Sarah, who works at Yuni’s Hairstyling Salon  in Bangor, said: “Everything about college is exciting! It has been difficult at times, I’ve found pronunciation difficult and was worried about learning at my age. But I really enjoy college, I have been coming for 5 years and have made a lot of new friends. My tutors have all been very helpful and friendly.

“My clients always comment on how much my English has improved, which makes me really happy! It’s a good place for me to practice my English.”

Daniel, Sarah’s tutor at Coleg Menai, said: “Sarah is excelling in class now, despite having no English at all when she started attending. Her dedication to improving her English is evident as she has fantastic attendance despite also having a job.”

Sarah said: “I keep coming to college because I like how much I’m improving, and because of all the friends I’ve made. I am much more confident now.”
