The Welsh Cup fourth round tie between Bangor City and Caernarfon Town will be shown live on S4C’s Sgorio on Saturday, 26 January, kick-off 7.30pm.

The cup tie promises to be a massive game between two of North Wales’ fiercest footballing rivals, who haven’t played each other at the highest level for over a decade and haven’t met in the Welsh Cup since 1998, when Bangor won 2-0 at Farrar Road.

The two clubs swapped places over the summer – Caernarfon promoted to Welsh Premier League and Bangor demoted to the Huws Gray Alliance after failing the required licence.

Caernarfon Town have enjoyed a resurgence in the last few seasons, gaining promotion back to the Welsh Premier League, where they have impressed with victories over the likes of Connah’s Quay Nomads, TNS and Cardiff Met Uni.

‘The Canaries’ are currently 6th in the Welsh Premier League and European football via the Welsh Premier Play-offs or by winning the Welsh Cup, is a real possibility for them this season.

The teams last played each other in the league cup in 2015, when Caernarfon edged the game 1-0, with a crowd of well over 1,000 in attendance.

This is believed to be the first game ever between the clubs with Caernarfon playing at a higher level than Bangor and given current form, they must be seen as clear favourites to progress to the Welsh Cup quarter-final.

But don’t write-off Bangor, they have a great history in this competition, having won the trophy eight times, including three consecutive winning seasons between 2008-2010.

Despite Bangor’s relegation and indifferent performances this season in the Cymru Alliance, the form book will be thrown out of the window for this one, as one of the greatest rivalries in Welsh Football is resumed.
